    孟子所处的时代，不仅“圣王不作，诸侯放恣”，而且“处士横议，杨朱、墨翟之言盈天下。天下之言不归杨，则归墨”（《滕文公下》）。孟子认为，杨墨的学说不息灭，孔子的学说就无法弘扬。荒谬的学说欺骗了百姓，阻塞了仁义的道路，就等于驱赶禽兽来吃人，人与人也将互相残杀。孟子为此而忧惧，故挺身而出，捍卫古代圣人的学说，反对杨墨的学说，驳斥一切荒谬的言论。当时百家争鸣，各抒己见。孟子曾与之辩论的有杨朱、墨翟、许行、告子、宋　等为代表的学派。
