    孟子受业子思之门人。在青壮年时期，除受业讲学外，还曾居邹为士。周游列国，已是近年老以后的活动。他怀着“王天下”、“救民于水火”的美好愿望，先后游历了梁、齐、宋、滕、鲁等国。他劝说时君施行仁政、王道，坚决反对暴政、霸道。在齐曾任过客卿。滕文公曾非常尊重他。虽然梁、齐等国不采纳他的主张，但他从不枉尺直寻。年老后，退而归邹。与万章、公孙丑等弟子疑难答问，著书立说。
