    1987年，泰安大汶口盐矿开始勘探开发。随着泰安市盐业化工厂和肥城市精制盐厂相继建成，以1989年泰安盐矿正式产盐为标志，山东由数千年单纯生产海盐，变成同时生产海盐、井矿盐的省份。山东矿盐通过进行扩产和技术改造，生产规模不断扩大，至2005年产量达到23.66万吨。
