相传正月十六日是天后(海神娘娘)的生辰(据考， 林默天后生辰为农历三月二
十三日)，蓬莱百姓从宋朝开始就把这一天当作节日庆祝。届时， 人们从四
面八方赶往丹崖山天后宫，进香膜拜，求签许愿，捐香火钱。各地农村纷纷
组织戏班、秧歌队，在天后宫院内戏楼上献演俚俗戏剧，在蓬莱阁下广场表
演大秧歌。人们在给天后娘娘进香之后，多与亲朋好友在天后宫院内看戏，
到广场看秧歌，购买个人喜爱的小商品，并趁兴游览蓬莱阁及其附近名胜，
直至尽兴而还。
这一习俗沿袭至今。
