    1979年10月3日,本市与日本山口县下关市结为友好城市。1980年,两市之间开辟第一条海上不定期
国际客货班轮航线。经18年运营,该航线在加强中日之间经贸、人员往来方面做出历史性贡献。随着
形势发展和中日双方需求,经市口岸办和省、市有关单位与日本西汽船株式会社共同努力,于1998年1月
12日开通青岛至日本下关的海上国际客货班轮定期航线(每周一班)。这是本市继至韩国仁川航线之后
第二条海上国际客货航线。
