    境内人口主要是汉族，少数民族多系因干部、职工工作调动和婚嫁迁入。1953年人口普查，有汉、回、满、苗4个民族。汉族361740人，占全县总人口的99%以上，少数民族只有15人。1964年人口普查，增加了瑶族、土家族，全县共有6个少数民族。汉族338192人，占全县总人口的99%以上，少数民族有49人。1982年人口普查，境内有9个民族，共计478097人，共中汉族478021人，占全县总人口的99.98%；回族49人，满族10人，白族5人，蒙古族4人，壮族4人，朝鲜族3人，维吾尔族、苗族各1人，少数民族共计76人，占全县总人口的0.02%。
