    周初，县境为郜国地，人口已很繁盛。西汉（公元前206—公元前24年），成武县约7515户，34839人；东汉（25—220年），约12155户，59777人；西晋（265—316年），约844户，2110人；北魏（386—534年），约2848户，7329人；刘宋（420—479年），约309户，1270人，这时，南方有城武侨县，约400余户，2000余人；隋（581—618年），约16560户，43660人；唐（618—907年），约16725户，119474人；宋（960—1279年），约15372户，29242人；金（1115—1234年），约16386户，31133人；元（1271—1368年），约7430户，39067人；明万历六年（1578年），有13194户，54462人；清康熙九年（1670年），有14890户，33795人（女不载），道光九年（1829年），有30216户，127380人。
    1928年，有32732户，171998人；1941年有32083户，142700人；1948年，有66315户，252000人。
    1953年，全国第一次人口普查，全县计85667户，361719人；1964年，第二次人口普查，计90669户，338240人；1982年，第三次人口普查，计101184户，478097人。
