    清代，县署由工房理农桑。民国初期，县公署设劝业所，推广优良品种，传授农业技术。30年代，县政府由建设科管农业，设有农事试验场1处，面积22亩，位于城西南堤外。
    新中国建立后，人民政府重视农业。1956年1月，由建设科分出农林科，1956年8月改设农业局；1971年1月至1972年7月，与林业局合并为农林局；1984年农业局改组为农牧渔业局，年底复名农业局。
    1953年，县建立了农业技术推广组，1954年改建为农业技术推广站；1956年，由农业技术站分出种子站；1977年，建立了植物保护站；1982年，建立土肥站。各乡镇均建有农业技术站。
