    清道光年间，定陶县分为19社，各社设有社学1所。1851年（清咸丰元年）后，撤销社建置，全县划分5方，每方设社学1所。辛亥革命后社学解体。
    社学设塾师1—2人，另设监学绅董2人。塾师的聘用，由各校绅董推荐，知县核定。塾师学俸从学田或义地的租课中支付。每所学校均有学田10余亩。入校学生多为贫寒子弟，每校招收学生一般在20人左右。学生在校，先读《小学》，后读《大学》、《孝经》、《论语》、《四书》、《五经》等。
