    1964年第二次人口普查，全县总户数122800户，总人口531110人（其中男272497人，女258613人），非农业人口8103人，农业人口占总人口的98.5%。1982年第三次人口普查，全县总户数172285户，人口742571人（其中男380519人，女362052人），非农业人口21001人，农业人口占总人口的97%。按行业统计，全县在业人口389967人。其中，农、林、牧、渔业劳动者356853人，占91%；各类专业技术人员11682人，占2.9%；商业工作人员3859人，占0.98%；服务性工作人员2127人，占0.54%；国家机关、党群组织、企事业单位工作人员2175人，占0.55%；生产、运输工人12067人，占3.9%。
