    1964年第二次人口普查时，全县有小学以上文化程度的48629人，占总人口的156.95‰。其中大专以上的167人，占总人口的0.55‰；高中1017人，占总人口的3.28‰；初中4176人，占总人口的13.48‰；小学43269人，占总人口的139.64‰。
    1982年第三次人口普查，有大专以上的1026人（男798人，女228人），占总人口的2.3‰；高中程度的23605人（男17432人，女6173人），占总人口的53.3‰；初中程度的67065人（男46829人，女20236人），占总人口的151.5‰；小学程度的141007人（男80212人，女60795人），占总人口的385.4‰。
    文盲半文盲151282人，占12岁以上人口的44.26％，占总人口的34.17％，比1964年下降16.86％。
