    1949年全县人口中，0至14岁人口比重为29.3％，65岁以上的人数占人口17.2％。因50年代高出生率的影响，1964年人口普查，0至14岁人口比重上升到43.88％，65岁以上人口比重降至4.26％。70年代推行计划生育以来，人口出生率有所下降。1982年人口普查，0至14岁人口比重降为33.35％，65岁以上人口比重5.05％，65岁以上人口与0至14岁人口之比为15.16％。年龄中位数为22.62，人口的年龄构成由年轻型进入成年型。1996年，0至14岁人口280967人，占总人口的25.19％；65岁以上74999人，占总人数6.72％。其中，有百岁老人19名。
