    1699年（清康熙三十八年），天主教北京教区主教伊大仁（意大利籍）到达临清，在河东三元阁建堂1处。1928年传入冠县，属山东省第一个华籍教区，称临清教区，主教府设在临清小芦教堂。1966年，全县有教徒164人，1982年100人。
