    佛教与道教何时传入临邑，具体时间无考。县境内的庙观寺院颇多。据1652年（清顺治九年）《临邑县志》记载，境内共有庙观寺院35处，其中城内及城郊19处。至民国期间尚有佛寺10余处，道院20余处。部分寺院因年久失修毁坏，解放初全县仅有僧尼3人。
    建国以后，庵、观、寺院的废墟有的建成学校，有的建了工厂，有的改为良田。其掌权神职人员和信徒或还俗或病故，尚存者甚少。
