    佛教，系世界三大宗教之一，为释迦牟尼所创立。其基本教理有“四谛”、“八正道”、“十二因缘”等，主张依经、纬、论三藏，修持戒、定、慧三学，以断除烦恼得到成佛为最终目的。
    佛教分九个宗派，县僧尼属何宗派无考。县内以定慧寺为首的一个宗派占全县僧尼的大多数，有严格的论资排辈，其最后28辈是：“大方智广文赐定，觉慧元明性海心，真经荣通常住国，湛然寂照本弘深”。只要是同一宗派，僧尼法号统一排辈。
