    1955年开始，禹城县按照《中华人民共和国兵役法(草案)》，实行义务兵役制。服役期限，步兵一般为3年，海、空军一般分别为4年、5年。根据需要，可超期服役。1968-1979年，步兵服役期限曾改为2年。征集兵员通常每年1次，县委、县人民政府成立征兵领导小组，由人武部具体承办。1955-1985年有14026人参加了义务兵。
    1978年起，根据国家新规定，少数义务兵可转为志愿兵，服役年限一般为15年，年龄一般不超过40岁，退役后，由当地政府负责安排工作。
