    德州市化学工业起步于50年代中期。此前民间多有利用当地碱土熬制火硝、硝盐及卤水者。60年代中期，德州农药厂、德州化肥厂相继建成投产，此后化学工业得到较快发展。至1990年，德州市已拥有包括德州石油化工总厂、德州化肥厂、德州农药厂、德州制药厂、德州市橡胶厂、德州市染料化工厂、德州市塑料厂、德州市日用化工厂等骨干企业在内的化工生产企业35处，年完成工业总产值15539万元，实现利税2298万元，分别占全市工业总产值和利税总额的9.63%和10.95%。
