1993年7月，设立经区安全生产委员会，办公室设在经区劳动人事局，与安全监察科合署办公。1998年8月，安全生产委员会办公室与工业管理处合署办公，安全生产委员会办公室的职能划转到工业管理处，隶属经济贸易发展局。2001年3月，设立科技与工业发展局，下设安全生产管理办公室。2004年4月，科技与工业发展局增挂安全生产监督管理局牌子，崮山镇、泊于镇、皇冠街道、凤林街道、西苑街道分别设立安全生产监督管理办公室。2007年10月，科技与工业发展局不再增挂安全生产监督管理局牌子，设立经区安全生产监督管理局，为正科级事业单位，隶属管委会。
