山口地肥水美，是粮食高产区，人们长期以种植小麦、玉米为主。1980 年后， 开始向种植蔬菜调整，先后兴起生姜和大蒜的种植。1982 年，村民开始饲养奶牛。
2000 年后，苗木花卉种植异军突起，快速发展。2005 年，全镇奶牛养殖小区 6 个，
日产鲜奶 1 吨左右。是年，全镇大小苗圃 180 个，总面积 200 公顷。2016 年，全
镇茶园面积 133 公顷，奶牛存栏量 3000 头，花卉苗木种植面积突破 1200 公顷。
