20 世纪 90 年代初，山口即着手编制城镇规划，2002 年通过山东省中心镇规划
评审委员会评审。山口城镇建设起步于 20 世纪 80 年代末 90 年代初。1990 年，中心大街扩路改道、工业路铺就柏油并加宽。1993 年，修建文化路，2002 年拓宽至20 米。全镇工业经济的快速发展，推进了山口的城镇建设，街、路、水、电、燃气等基础设施同步发展，居民小区逐渐兴起，街、路两旁工厂连片，各类商店鳞次栉比，餐饮、旅馆、新兴超市同步兴起，初具城市规模，是全国文明村镇建设先进单位。
