    孟氏嫡裔初始主要职责为祭祀孟子，明代诏封世职后，孟氏族人也统归其管理。
    作为孟子嫡裔，大宗户的宗子，除在政治、经济、文化上享受封建统治者所钦赐的世袭翰林院五经博士以及加封的其他官职：赐予祭田、佃户、庙户、林户、府第，优免差徭，优学优试等特权外，并主持续修族谱、决定续谱者能否入谱，指任族长，以及20户的户头、户举等。如发现假冒孟氏族人，或私售、遗失族谱者，则“治以逆祖之罪”。
