    历代帝王为儒家学说维护其封建统治，“罢黜百家，独尊儒术”，推崇孔孟之道。对孟子追封加谥，敕修林庙，御驾孟庙祭祀，使孟子的地位达到仅次于“至圣”孔子而为“亚圣”的高度。同时，对孟子父母也追封加衔，对其后裔赐以官爵，使家族得到一般家族无法得到的殊荣。
