    建国前人口 由县境东半部出土的大量细石器等史前文物知，早在约1.5万年前，即已有为数较众的华夏先民在此定居。其后，夏商置厥国，周置郕国，春秋置鲁中都邑、阚邑，汉代以后，始终置有县级机构，南朝宋侨置阳平郡于此，表明境内人口一直较为繁盛。但因无史料可考，难以确述。今据旧《汶上县志》及民国统计资料所载，将汶上县建国前人口数量分列如下：
    明洪武二十四年(1391)，6666户，79233人。
    明万历二十年(1592)，42657户，107806人。
    清康熙五十二年(1713)，5208户，70571人。
    清光绪二十八年(1902)，53457户，366187人。
    清宣统三年(1911)，45134户，377343人。
    1920年（民国9年），45838户，372299人。
    1934年，71745户，421095人。
    1937年，43285户，364745人。
    1941年，81411户，437623人。
    建国后人口 1948年汶上解放后，老运河以西划入梁山、嘉祥等县，人口减至30余万。因社会安定，人民生产生活及医疗卫生事业不断发展，人口增长较快。1949年为36.21万人，1987年为61.81万人，扣除1958～1960年三年困难时期非正常减少部分，平均每年增长近万人，人均占有土地由1949年的2.94亩减至1.47亩。
