    清末及民国期间，全县人口以农、林、牧、渔为业者在95%以上。新中国建立后，工、商、政、教人数逐年增加。1982年，全县在业人口为175804人，其中农业人口占在业人口的87.59%。1990年，全县在业人口为220354人，其中农业人口占在业人口的88.91%。
