    南四湖位于山东省南部偏西，跨东经116°34′～117°21′，北纬34°27′～35°20′，呈西北东南方向展布。
    南四湖处在山东丘陵西部边缘与黄河冲积平原的交接地带。湖东近湖区为第四系冲积丘陵平原。地势东高西低，坡降一般在1/1000～1/1400；湖西全是数千年来黄河改道、决口泛滥淤积而成的平原。地势东低西高，坡降一般在1/5000～1/20000。
    南四湖属淮河流域，处于暖温带季风大陆性气候区，为水生动植物的生长提供了必要的条件。
