    微山县境内，设县级政权始于战国时期。周赧王二十九年(前286年)，齐、楚、魏共灭宋，三分其地，楚得湖陵邑置县，设县尹。秦时置任城、湖陵、广戚、留县，汉初又置橐县(后称高平县)。上述各县至唐时，才陆续撤销，县境即分属于任城、方与、驺、沛等县。
