    据明万历《兖州府志》和清咸丰《济宁直隶州志》记载，1391年（明太祖洪武二十四年）济宁州有3376户34166人。1644年（清顺治元年）17509人；1840年（清道光二十年）92315人；1906年（清光绪三十二年）174937人。
    据民国《济宁县志》记载，1927年济宁县有70017户381139人；1938年全县117617户465950人。
    1949年底，全县54905户253448人；1953年全县有61985户285695人；1964年81736户376192人；1982年115283户526004人；1990年143542户585706人；1995年153111户606587人。1995年比1949年增加98206户353139人，年均增加3733户7677人。
    境内素以农业为主，1949年非农业人口6133人，占总人口的2.42%，1957年8779人，占2.85%；1970年7348人，占1.67%；1980年9746人，占1.91%；1990年20772人，占3.55%；1995年35416人，占5.84%。
