    济宁居水陆之要冲，明洪武五年（1372年），在坝口南河西设南城水驿，配马12匹、驴26头，以备递运。设驿丞具体管理马、驿、车、船夫驿传。明万历二十四年（1596年），济宁设铺舍16处。清乾隆七年（1742年），废驿丞，以驿属州合而为一，有走递马18匹，马夫4人，水夫161人，奇水夫230人。到19世纪末，随着新邮政的兴起，原有驿站日渐消失。1912年6月，民国政府将全国驿站、铺递撤除，济宁邮驿随之撤销。
