　　1906年（清光绪三十二年）前，除县学和书院外，多系私塾。民国初年，逐渐为新学堂取代，但在偏僻乡村，则一直延续到1945年抗日战争胜利。县内塾学，有村塾（蒙学）、祠塾（族学）、家塾、义塾四种。1900年（清光绪二十六年），知县李务滋捐款三千千，发当生息，在流饭桥、小圩河、寒亭、南流、马司等村设义学5处，招收贫寒学童免费入学。
