    清同治三年(1864)《重修宁海州志》载：宁海州男女劳动力12．65万个。民国22年(l933)，牟平县男女劳动力26．13万个(含乳山县部分)。民国38年(1949)，境內男女农业劳动力14．8l万个，每个劳动力平均耕地6．5亩；1968年，共有农业男女劳动力20．l4万个，每个劳动力平均耕地4．3亩。l985年，共有农业男女劳动力24．6万个，每个劳动力平均耕地3．2亩。
    1983年，生产责任制落实后，农业剩余劳力逐年增多。全县从事农业、林业、畜牧业、渔业、蚕业劳力多达14．99万个，农业劳力过剩，尚能腾出l／3的劳力转向工、副、商、运输各业。
