    境内为汉族居住区，也有少量少数民族居住。1982年人口普查时，全区共有9个民族，人口为281455人，其中汉族281413人，占99.99％，朝鲜族16人，回族9人，满族9人，苗族3人，高山族2人，白族1人，土族1人，壮族1人。少数民族人口分布于10个乡镇，其中福山镇17人，臧家乡9人，古现镇、兜余镇和东厅乡各3人，高疃镇2人，张格庄乡、回里镇和八角乡各1人，门楼镇2人。
