    建国以后，境内人口密度逐年增加。1949年，平均每平方公里为281人；1985年，每平方公里为474人；比全国每平方公里人口密度高4.5倍，比1949年增加193人，增长率为68.7％。各乡镇人口密度差别很大，福山镇平均每平方公里为990人，比全区人口平均密度高108.9％；张格庄乡平均每平方公里只有327人，比全区人口平均密度低31.0％；两乡镇人口密度每平方公里相差663人。全区密度较高的乡镇是福山镇、兜余镇、八角乡，密度较低的乡镇是张格庄乡、高疃镇、回里镇。
