    1991年全镇总人口37744人，其中非农业人口1910人。汉族为主，少数民族有回、
苗、彝、满、土、佤、布依、拉祜、纳西九个民族，共计33人。1988年以来，由于新
城镇党委、政府狠抓计划生育工作，措施得力，至1991年人口自然增长率下降到3．2
‰。
