    1949年全区耕地面积1533.9万亩，每个农业人口平均占有3.9亩。总播种面积2046.4万亩，复种指数为133.4%。1953年耕地面积扩大到1572.6万亩，比1949年增加38.7万亩。总播面积2085.4万亩，比1949年增加39万亩，复种指数为132.5%。1958年以后，由于兴修水利、交通、基本建设占地和因灾荒废弃等原因，耕地面积逐年减少。到1985年底，耕地还有1093.66万亩，比1949年减少440.24万亩，每个农业人口平均占有耕2.09亩，比1949年减少1.81亩。如果照此继续减少下去，几百年之后，全区人民将蒙受不可设想的灾难。
