    建国前，农村医病多靠乡间民医。治疗以中医中药为主、兼用民间土单验方。建国后，农村医疗有了很快发展。1955年农业合作化时期，为农村培养了一批保健员。1958年，取销个体行医，大队建卫生室，设保健员、接生员。1965年大队设卫生员。1968年，举办农村合作医疗站。1976年，全区有合作医疗站8236处。有赤脚医生20022人。
    1978年以后，农村实行个体承包生产责任制，合作医疗改为保健室。由集体变为个体行医。
