    中华民国以前，历代朝政均实行募兵制。他们招募新兵格式不同。明代规定：男子16～60岁为成丁，成丁要服官役。役有三等：按户服役叫“里甲”；按丁服役叫“均摇”；临时应差叫“差役”。清代规定：应募者，系土著良民， 18岁以上，25岁以下，身高1.6米以上，无嗜好，身无残疾为合格。
