    1930年（民国19年），日照设民众教育馆，分管体育。建国后，1949～1955年，体育隶属县府文教科分管。1956年，日照县体育运动委员会成立。第一任体委主任由副县长丁履廉兼任。
    1972年由县革委政治部领导，建立体育组。1974年，恢复体委。
    1975～1984年，先后配齐专职体委主任、副主任。1989年底，地级市建立，体委隶属文体委，有干部职工25人，下设体育运动学校、航海运动学校、业余体育学校。
