       2000年以后，经区发挥临港优势，抢抓国际船舶产业转移机遇，以“造船总装化、配套本地化、服务社会化”为发展方向，加快推进骨干造船企业从单一造船向造船和自主研发并举转变，发展高附加值、高技术含量的船型，形成造修船、船舶配套、船舶设计协调发展的新型船舶工业体系。2008年，经区被省政府命名为“山东省船舶工业聚集区”。至2010年末，全区拥有规模以上船舶及零部件生产企业13家，从业人员约5300人。2010年，完成工业产值57.9亿元，占规模以上工业总产值的14.8%。
